Who are we?

Currently numbering 32, the Federation’s member companies represent more than 90% of the French trade in raw hides and skins. The professional members of the Federation manage the raw material of about 200 slaughterhouses spread over the French territory. These companies are: traders, collectors, traders/collectors, slaughterhouses directly involved in the marketing activity of their hides and skins, sworn experts or brokers, commission agents and other service providers.

A bit of history

Created in 1948, the Syndicat des Ventes Publiques de Cuirs de France and the Syndicat National des Négociants et Collecteurs de Peaux merged in 1977 to become the Syndicat Général des Cuirs et Peaux Bruts (General Union of Raw Hides and Skins) before taking on the name Syndicat Général des Cuirs et Peaux (General Union of Hides and Skins) in 1996.

In 1974, the Syndicat des Ventes Publiques, together with the Centre Technique du Cuir, created the Agence Nationale pour la Lutte contre les Parasites de la Peau du Bétail (National Agency for the Control of Cattle Skin Parasites), which participated in the development of the varron eradication plan. In 1979, the General Union of Raw Hides and Skins set up a Department for the Improvement of the Quality of Hides and Skins, whose mission is to improve the skinning process in slaughterhouses and to promote good breeding practices (handling, transport, hygiene, use of anti-parasite products, etc.).
In 2021, the Union becomes the French Hides and Skins Federation.
